My Reflections: The Lead Up – From My Book Launch to Light Bulb Moment

The 27th September 2012 was a night that will forever be etched in a memory as a very special night. It was the night that I launched my first book Profit Rocket: The five key focus areas to skyrocket my profit. It was the culmination of months editing and pouring over version after version of design files to make sure the end product was right. In actual fact the writing part of it was the easy bit. I wrote the 38000 words that the books contained just 7 ‘short’ (or shall I say ‘long’) days. It was in fact the production part that left me wanting to pull my hair out at times but the end result was so worth it. I was so grateful for the support of the people that turned out on the day and that have supported it since which has seen it become an Amazon Best Seller.

Now, I am not going to share my journey to that point on this blog as that is contained within my book should you want to know about it. What I want to do is pick up from that point and continue the story. On reflection, that night marked the first turning point for me. It was the point where my then struggling less than a year old business started to get noticed and profile. I picked up many new clients and my revenue increased by a factor of 10 on my first year of business. I thought I was happy doing what I was doing but the doubts began to set in (just fleeting thoughts at the beginning) about whether this was in fact the business I wanted or was I just doing it because I thought I should be. I think all of us at times get caught in that trap. Have you?

In any event, I brushed these thoughts aside and in late 2012 I applied and was accepted for a mentoring programme that would ultimately comprise of 12 entrepreneurs led by an experienced business leader who in his career had helped co-found and build, not 1, not 2 but 3 BILLION POUND companies in the UK. The express focus of the programme was for creating the next generation of iconic businesses.

Now in all honesty, my reasons for applying were a bit strategic. You see, most entrepreneurs and business owners I come across fall into the category, that they are good at what they do or good at the doing part of their business but they are not as strong on the numbers side of their business as they should be which ultimately impact their ability to THRIVE. I figured being someone who was strong on the numbers and entrepreneurial also that being in a group of people aiming really big in their ambitions would ultimately be good for business but I didn’t go into the process with any expectations on what it would mean for me to potentially create a scalable game-changing business. To be frank, I wasn’t sure it would even be possible.

The light bulb moment happened for me on Day 2 of the 3-day programme kick off retreat which I have termed my personal SHIFT DAY.
